Flower Tessellation Activity for Kids (with a Printable Template)

background-image

This flower tessellation activity is a math activity and an art activity all in one! A tessellation is defined as a geometric shape that can be arranged in a repeating pattern with no space between the shapes and no overlapping. I think they are fascinating! We have shared other tessellation activities – fall leaf tessellations and Christmas tree tessellations with you, and I thought it would be fun to do a flower version for spring and summer.

This flower tessellation activity is a great collaborative art project! It’s totally possible to do this with just one or two kids, or you can make a larger version with a whole class contributing.

If you want to see the process in action, click the video below:

Step 1: Print and Cut

Print the template (the link to print is at the bottom of this post) – it comes with four flowers on a page. Then, cut the flowers apart.

Step 2: Decorate your flowers!

We used watercolor paints to decorate our flowers, which worked really well. I decided to print them on card stock since we were using paint, but if you’re planning to color them with crayons or colored pencils, regular paper will work just fine.

The flowers dried quickly after we painted them. They look so beautiful! We used a set of 16 watercolors, which had lots of great color options.

Step 3: Assemble your flower tessellation puzzle!

We mounted our tessellation flowers on poster board to display them. It’s not hard to do! I drew a line with a ruler to create a straight edge for the first flower to sit on. After that, it was not difficult to keep them in a straight line.

Here’s the final product! We worked on having a variety of colors, which worked so well. There were four of us painting these flowers – if you do this with a class, you can make your final artwork much bigger!

I really like the activities that I find on your site. I LOVE flowers so I may just create this one myself :-) I can't wait to use the Christmas Tree pattern with the daycare kids next week.
